This weekend, my wife and I had the chance to experience something I’d heard about for quite some time but had never actually taken part in—the famous meat draw at the Colborne Legion Branch 187. What I expected was a small fundraiser with a few people milling about. What I walked into was a lively, welcoming community gathering that instantly made me feel like part of the family.
A Full House and Full Hearts

The moment we stepped through the doors, the atmosphere hit us—in the best possible way. The place was bustling. Dozens of people laughing, chatting, reconnecting with old friends, and introducing themselves to new ones. Whether it was people cheering for their ticket numbers or sharing stories over a drink, the energy was contagious.
And as new members, we couldn’t have been welcomed more warmly. People came over to say hello, ask where we were from, and share their own Legion stories. It felt genuine. It felt like home.
The Draws: Fun, Friendly, and a Great Way To Pass The Time
The setup was simple but exciting. For just $12, you got three sets of tickets, giving you 12 chances to win one of the many meat prizes laid out for the afternoon (draws at 3:30, 4:30 and 5:30pm). On top of that, you received a strip of 50/50 tickets, adding another layer of excitement to the day.
Every round another round of cheers (and some fun boos along the way. Especially if Tom was to win one more time LOL). Another wave of suspense. Even if your number didn’t get called, the room kept you smiling.

More Than a Draw — It’s a Community Hub
Between rounds, we enjoyed watching a game of pool—a classic schooner in hand—while others relaxed watching TV or catching up with friends. Everywhere you looked, you could see the heart of the Legion: community, connection, and support.
It wasn’t just about winning meat (though that was definitely fun!). It was about spending a Saturday afternoon in a space where people truly show up for each other.
A Beautiful Tradition
What really struck me was how meaningful the whole event felt. You could see families sharing laughs, long-time members reconnecting, and newcomers like us being pulled right into the fold. Supporting a great cause felt easy when the experience was this enjoyable.
Final Thoughts
My first meat draw at Colborne Legion Branch 187 definitely won’t be my last. From the friendly faces to the welcoming atmosphere to the simple joy of spending time together, it was the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
If you’ve never been to a Legion meat draw, I highly recommend giving it a try. You might go for the prizes—but you’ll stay for the people.
