As we look back throughout January and most of February at Branch 187, it’s impossible not to feel energized by the momentum our community has built. The past several weeks have been a powerful reminder of what happens when people show up, pitch in, and celebrate together — and the results speak for themselves.
January/February delivered one of the craziest winters on record. Resulting in over 6 events cancelled and branch closures.
That did not stop us... Success fosters success and we continued to see outstanding attendance and rise in activities outside of those cancellations.
We began by re‑launching our monthly newsletter, bringing back a tradition that keeps our members informed, connected, and engaged. It’s more than a communication tool — it’s a reflection of who we are and what we’re building together.
Our commitment to remembrance and youth education was front and centre as we honoured students from Colborne Public School and Northumberland Hills Public School for their outstanding contributions in art, poetry, and essays.
Their work helps keep the spirit of Remembrance alive, and recognizing their efforts remains one of the most meaningful things we do.
Membership continues to grow as well, with 13 new members joining the Branch — a clear sign that people see value in what we stand for and want to be part of our mission.
Our community support efforts were equally strong. We proudly presented $1,000 to St. Mary’s St. Vincent de Paul in Grafton, helping them continue their essential work. We also donated $2,000 to The Blessing Cupboard, Colborne’s local food bank, while supporting the Prospect Community Church lunch program, ensuring more families have access to nutritious meals.
Then came the moment that truly defined our spirit: the Maple Court fire. In the face of crisis, Branch 187 stepped up without hesitation. Volunteers mobilized instantly, the hall became a hub for donations, and the community responded with overwhelming generosity — our legion received more than $7,000 in donations for displaced residents. It was a powerful reminder of what the Legion represents: service, compassion, and neighbours helping neighbours.
Even with so much happening, our events calendar didn’t slow down. Our Roast Beef Dinner drew more than 90 guests, filling the hall with conversation, connection, and the unmistakable feeling of a Branch that’s thriving. We kept the momentum going with a lively Super Bowl Sunday Party, bringing members together for food, fun, and football.
Behind the scenes, volunteers rolled up their sleeves for a Branch Spa Day, resurfacing the hall floor with the skilled support of Greg Filice and Bill Sharpe. Their hard work has given our space a fresh, polished look — a gift that will be appreciated at every event to come.
And of course, we capped it all off with a warm and spirited Valentine’s Day celebration, filling the hall once again with music, laughter, and community connection.
From major donations to major events, from youth recognition to emergency response, from new members to renewed traditions — Branch 187 is moving forward with purpose, pride, and undeniable momentum.
The year is young, and if this is how we’ve started, imagine what’s still ahead.
