Your Legacy is Not.
It is with profound sadness that Royal Canadian Legion Branch 187 announces the passing of our Immediate Past President and Life Member, Comrade Chris Swoffer.
There are people who belong to a Legion Branch, and there are people who become part of its very foundation. Chris was one of those people.
For decades, Chris gave his time, his leadership and, most importantly, himself to Branch 187. He served for many years on our Executive, including three years as President, and in 2024 was
bestowed one of the Legion's highest honours - Life Membership - in recognition of his extraordinary service.
Chris's Contribution cannot be measurered
by years, positions or titles.
At its heart, the Royal Canadian Legion exists because generations of Canadians have understood that remembrance carries with it a responsibility to serve - to honour our Veterans, to support those who served, and to strengthen the communities they fought to protect.
Chris lived that responsibility.
He believed deeply in the Legion and in what it could accomplish when people worked together. He built relationships with our members, other community organizations and all levels of government because he understood that Branch 187 was never meant to simply occupy a building in Colborne. It was meant to serve Colborne and the surrounding community - And Chris served.
Sometimes that meant leading from the President's chair. Other times it meant working behind thebar, cooking a meal, repairing something that was broken, helping with an event, cleaning up
afterward, or quietly taking care of something before anyone else even realized it needed to be done.
That was Chris.
His fingerprints are on so much of what Branch 187 is today, but his legacy is greater than any project he completed or position he held. It lives in the Branch he helped strengthen, the community he helped build, and in those who will continue the work he believed in.
Our hearts are with his partner Nadine, his daughter Melissa, his grandchildren and his entire family during this incredibly difficult time.
The flag at Branch 187 will fly at half-mast in his honour.
